| Greeting from Professor C.C. Chan |
| I have engaged in the research and development of electric vehicles over the last four decades and witness it’s up and down. In the past few years, the Chinese government has launched intensive incentives for the development of electric vehicles, but the result was not ideal as we expected. Now we are seeing the dawn of the commercialization of electric vehicles. However we still need go through the darkness to reach the bright. There are still challenges to be overcome. Therefore it is time to review where we are now and how we should go ahead. The 2nd China EV Charging Infrastructure & Grid Integration Forum 2012 is a timely brain storming to discuss the policy, technology and market. The success of commercialization of electric vehicles depending on three factors: cost; convenience of use; and energy consumption and emission. Thus we need the following three goodness factors: 1.Availibility of good products with good performance and affordable cost; 2. Availability of good infrastructures that are efficient and user friendly; 3. Availability of good business model that can leverage the cost of batteries. These need the shake hand and compromise between automobile industry and electric power industry, as well as the alliance of stakeholders. Electric vehicle industry is a disruptive industry, since the function, production and commercial chain of electric vehicles are not all the same with conventional vehicles. Electric vehicle is not only transportation means, but it is also an electric device with energy storage capability. Therefore, we must open mind and to have courage to meet the challenges. We need accumulate experience and learn each other. I am pleased to write this greeting message and welcome you to join this very timely gathering, which I believe would be fruitful and enjoyable. |
